Skin Structure
The skin is made up of two main layers. The outer layer, or epidermis, has a surface of nonliving cells that form the body's protective cover. These cells are constantly being shed and replaced by new ones, which are developed in the inner layer of the epidermis.
Below the epidermis is the dermis, the thicker part of the skin. It contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue. The sweat glands are located in the dermis, and they collect fluid containing water, salt, and waste products from the blood. The oil, or sebaceous, glands that secrete the oil that lubricates the surface of the skin and hair are also located in the dermis.
Skin Types
Skin appearance is affected by internal and external factors.
Normal skin is the perfect balanced skin type. It has a healthy glow, with a fine texture and no open pores. It rarely develops spots or shiny areas.
Dry skin is the result of loss of water from the outer surface of the epidermis and its insufficient replacement from the tissues below. Sensitive skin is usually quite fine in texture, with a tendency to be rosier than usual. Due to the alterations of the hydro-lipid content of the skin with a consequent increase in trans-epidermal water loss, the skin become more sensitive to be attacked by environmental micro-organisms and easily irritated.
Aging skin is characterized by wrinkles and shininess. It feels thinner when pinched because it has lost its elasticity and part of the basic fat that provides firmness to the younger skin.
Oily and Acne skin is the result of excess amount of oil that comes to the outer surface of the skin through the sebaceous glands, with a tendency towards pimples, blackheads and sallow appearance, and being affected not only of heredity, but also of temperature and emotional state.
